Capturing the Enchanting Amalfi Coast: A Journey with John Vijlbrief

John Vijlbrief, author, photographer, and documentary maker, traveled with his colleague Ralph on a Transavia flight from Amsterdam to Naples. Upon reaching the airport, they picked up their rental car, and their journey began.

"We plan to capture a part of the coast of the Italian region of Campania on film. In Naples, we visit Pompeii (see my other multimedia book in this series for that) and then drive on to the Amalfi Coast, south of Naples."

An experience you absolutely must have!
In Europe, there are a few roads you must drive at least once. One of them is the Amalfi Drive SS163, a breathtaking coastal road that winds through an enchanting landscape. The Amalfi Coast is located on the southern side of the Sorrento Peninsula, extending from Positano in the west to Vietri sul Mare in the east. The beauty of this area is so captivating that the Amalfi Coast is now a UNESCO World Heritage site. The Amalfi Coast road isn't very long: the stretch from Sorrento to Salerno is only fifty kilometres. However 'short,' it's a dream road to drive, an experience you absolutely must have!

Deep gorges
The coastal road winds along deep gorges, steep cliffs, and through tunnels carved into rocks. There are also many lemon groves along the way. Colourful villages with narrow alleyways line the route. And everywhere, there's a view of the azure Gulf of Salerno. I let my colleague Ralph handle the driving. It's a road full of hairpin bends that requires skill and a bit of daring from the driver. It's mostly about staying focused, eyes on the road! The next day, as we repeat the route, we switch places so that Ralph can enjoy the drive, and I take the driver's seat. The drive along the coastal road of the Amalfi Coast on the Gulf of Salerno in the tourist region of Campania is a delightful adventure that you'll fondly remember. A thrilling road trip where you need to pay close attention to cars, city buses, and especially motorcyclists coming from the opposite direction at every turn. Because all you want to do here is enjoy the stunning view that surprises you anew at every bend, prompting me to sometimes exclaim 'wow' out loud!

Achter het stuur: haarspeldbochten bedwingen op de Amalfikustweg!
John Vijlbrief, auteur, fotograaf en documentairemaker, reisde samen met zijn vakcollega Ralph met een Transaviavlucht van Amsterdam naar Napels. Bij de luchthaven haalden ze de huurauto op en hun reis kon beginnen.

‘We hebben het plan om een deel van de kust van de Italiaanse regio Campanië op beeld vast te leggen. Zo bezoeken we in Napels Pompeii (zie daarvoor mijn andere multimedia boek in deze reeks) en rijden dan door naar de Amalfi Kust, zuidelijker van Napels.’

Het is een droomweg om op te rijden!
Er zijn in Europa een aantal wegen die je minstens een keer gereden moet hebben. Een daarvan is de Amalfi Drive SS163, een schitterende kustweg die op fenomenale wijze door een betoverend landschap slingert. De Amalfi Kust is gelegen aan de zuidkant van het schiereiland van Sorento. Dit gebied loopt van Positano in het westen tot aan Vietri sul Mare in het oosten. De natuur is hier zó mooi dat de Amalfikust inmiddels tot het Werelderfgoed behoort. De Amalfikustweg is niet zo lang: de weg van Sorento naar Salerno is slechts vijftig kilometer lang. Hoe ‘kort’ ook, het is een droomweg om op te rijden, die je absoluut eens gedaan moet hebben!

Diepe ravijnen
De kustweg slingert langs diepe ravijnen, steile kliffen en door in rotsen uitgehouwen tunnels. Ook zijn er veel citroengaarden. Langs de route liggen kleurrijke dorpjes vol kleine steegjes. En overal dat uitzicht op de azuurblauwe Golf van Salerno. Rijden laat ik aan mijn collega Ralph over. Het is een weg vol haarspeldbochten die ervaring en wat lef van de chauffeur vraagt. Het is vooral opletten, ogen op de weg! De volgende dag, wanneer we de route nogmaals doen, wisselen we van plaats, zodat Ralph kan genieten van de route en ik achter het autostuur plaatsneem. De autorit langs de kustweg van de Amalfikust aan de Golf van Salerno in de toeristische streek Campanië is een heerlijk avontuur waar je nog vaak met genoegen aan terugdenkt. Een spannende roadtrip omdat je, bij iedere bocht goed moet opletten op de auto’s, stadsbussen en vooral motorrijders uit tegenovergestelde richting. Je wilt hier namelijk maar een ding doen: van het schitterende uitzicht genieten dat steeds, bij iedere bocht weer opnieuw verrast en waarvan ik soms keihard ‘wauw’ roep!
