Poen de Wijs: 'I started with a watercolour study of the Greek relief I had seen in the Louvre; the art-historical beginning. This was followed by interpretations of a Roman wall painting, part of Botticelli's 'La Primavera' and versions by Rubens, Boucher and Regnault.

I plodded my way through art history. Gradually the ‘Three Graces’ took hold of me. New associations emerged: fragmentary memories of the ancient symbols of fertility and love, textured surfaces and compositional forms. This made it easier to move on, to process the impression I had received years earlier from the street car moment with the three girls...

Racial integration
I didn't need complicated inventions to express "racial integration" or to arrive at a forced contemporary version. My models were easy to add. This created images with references to the present, past and future. The most remarkable thing was that while making this series of watercolours, panels, paintings and lithographs, it turned out that everything I had learned in 25 years of painting was summed up and culminated.'

De Drie Gratiën: over de schilderijen
Voordat de kunstschilder van het Modern Realisme Poen de Wijs (1948-2014) begon aan zijn uitgebreide serie schilderijen, aquarellen en litho's met als thema ‘De Drie Gratiën’ was ik al bekend met zijn oeuvre waarin zich werkstukken van fraai geschilderde vrouwen bevinden. De eerste serie naakten in zijn archief dateren van 1977. Voor die tijd heeft hij uiteraard ook naakten getekend. Ik beperk mij in dit boek tot de gearchiveerde collectie van Poen de Wijs. Pas in 1990 begint hij aan de omvangrijke serie ‘De Drie Gratiën’. Hieraan gaat een periode vooraf waarin hij, met groot gemak, verschillende voorstudies schildert in de stijl van Rubens, Botticelli, Boucher en Regnault. 

Poen: 'Ik begon met een aquarelstudie van het Griekse reliëf, dat ik in het Louvre had gezien; het kunsthistorische begin dus. Daarna volgden interpretaties van een Romeinse wandschildering, een gedeelte uit Botticelli's 'La Primavera' en versies van Rubens, Boucher en Regnault, Ik ploeterde mezelf een weg door de kunstgeschiedenis. Gaandeweg kregen ‘De Drie Gratiën’ mij opnieuw in hun greep...'
