My passion
Poen de Wijs told me: ‘Watercolour became my passion, because of the simplicity of the material. It only contains gum and pigment, which however is in contrast to the complexity of its application. By the vibrant brightness, akin to stained glass, when the paint is applied in one layer alongside the velvety depth, which grows from stacked layers, by playing with water, or rather the management of water. Water moves until it has evaporated. Pigment particles in the water will move and will only attach to the paper when the water is absorbed. A tip of watercolour, flowing into a puddle of water on paper, turns whimsical marble patterns. It makes water movements visible, changing, crawling, parting into heavier and lighter particles, floating towards the edge of the lake, eventually forming a colour circle while drying slowly’.
My friend
This is one of the four Masterclasses about the techniques of Poen de Wijs, who was a dear friend of my. I look back with great pleasure on the year in which I compiled with great pleasure, together with Poen de Wijs these Masterclasses and digital study books about his fabulous paintingtechniques!
