This digital book focuses on the series of paintings 'Time & Space. In the series of paintings "Time & Space," the prominent painter of Modern Realism of the 20th-century Poen de Wijs illustrates how people have been (and are) in search of time. He portrays how individuals gazed at the sky and related earthly existence to the stars and gods. Incorporating the four seasons, past-present-future, the circle of life, and adding playful elements like clocks, sundials, shadow clocks, pendulums, sextants, and astrolabes to his artwork, Poen connects nature to culture with animals and flowers. He quotes from ancient artworks and occasionally alludes, with a wink, to classical gods (such as Atlas depicted as a boy carrying the world globe or Kronos as a bubble-blowing girl). Poen engages in the virtuoso play characteristic of his artistic work. As if all of this were not enough, he incorporates gold, silver, and copper paint in this series, giving his work an almost three-dimensional allure.

Painting on papyrus
Poen adds another element of surprise with his studies. In Luxor, Egypt, he acquired original handmade papyrus. Extensive research was required to figure out how to prepare, prime, process, and preserve papyrus in an acid-free manner. With his refined painting technique on the beautiful structure of this ancient material, he provides an additional reference to ancient Egypt, where the 'search for time' began.

In deze schilderijen “Tijd & Ruimte” laat de vooraanstaande 20^ste eeuwse kunstschilder van het Modern Realisme Poen de Wijs zien hoe mensen op zoek zijn (geweest) naar de tijd. Hoe mensen naar de hemel keken en het aardse bestaan aan de sterren en de goden relateerden. Hij verwerkte de vier seizoenen, heden-verleden-toekomst, de cirkel van het leven, en voegde speelse elementen als uurwerk, zonnewijzer en schaduwklok, slinger, sextant en astrolabium toe aan zijn kunstschilderwerk. Met dieren en bloemen koppelt hij natuur aan cultuur. Hij citeert uit oude kunstwerken en verwijst, soms met een knipoog, naar klassieke goden (Atlas als jongetje die de wereldbol draagt of Kronos als bellenblazend meisje). Poen speelt daarmee het virtuoze spel dat zo bekend van zijn artistieke werk is. En of dat alles nog niet genoeg is: in deze serie verwerkt hij goud- zilver- en koperverf. Het geeft zijn werk een bijna driedimensionale allure.

Op papyrus schilderen
Met zijn studies zorgt Poen voor nog en verrassing. In Luxor, Egypte, kocht hij het originele, handgemaakte papyrus. Veel onderzoek moest hij doen om uit te vinden hoe hij papyrus zuurvrij kon prepareren, gronderen, bewerken en conserveren. Met zijn verfijnde schildertechniek op de prachtige structuur van dit oeroude materiaal, geeft hij een extra verwijzing naar het oude Egypte waar ‘het zoeken naar de tijd’ begon.
